How to Read Blueprints for Material Quantities

Verify the Scale

Before measuring anything, confirm the scale bar on the drawing. PDF blueprints are often printed or exported at different sizes. Use the graphic scale, not the text scale.

Start with the Foundation

Work from the ground up. Foundation plan shows footing sizes, slab thickness, and reinforcement. Calculate concrete volume, rebar quantities, and formwork.

Measure Wall Lengths

Use the floor plan to measure every wall. Note exterior vs interior walls — they have different framing, insulation, and finish requirements.
